WEEK 2:
POETRY WORKSHOP

DAY 1: BLACKOUT POETRY

  1. Create a blog post entitled "Day 1: Blackout Poetry."

  2. Think/Pair/Share: What is blackout poetry? Type your own ideas on your blog and then compare with your partner and table group.

  3. Investigate examples of blackout poetry on Google like the one shown below. Choose an example that you like, post it (with a citation) on your blog and share it with your table group.

  4. Discuss as a class what constitutes as a blackout poem. What must it include? Are there any "rules"?

  5. For the rest of the class period, you will work on creating your own black out poem. Feel free to use 1 or 2 pages from a hard copy of a text I have placed at the front of the room. Or, find a text online, print it and create your blackout poem.  I encourage you to choose a text you have not previously read. Remember, you can incorporate a visual into your blackout poem if you'd like.

  6. Tweet your blackout poem on Twitter using our class hashtag: #missupoetry
