In this Global Literature Circles project, two 10th grade English language arts classes from Cedar Falls High School and Singapore American School will divide students into small groups of 6 students, 3 from each class. Students will read and discuss The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger using Blogger, Zoom and Twitter (#IASGcatcher). They will also work within a small group to craft a final response to a theme of the text using Buncee.

The ultimate outcome of this unit is for students to utilize skills in the areas of literacy, collaboration and technology to read and discuss a text with students on the other side of the world. The hope is that students will find how a novel such as The Catcher in the Rye contains themes which are applicable and relatable wherever the reader lives.

As shown on the Standards & Goals page, students will be able to...

  • Analyze the development of a theme throughout The Catcher in the Rye as shown through quotations and visuals in their final presentation of a theme via Buncee.

  • Engage in a discussion within a small group about a text and contribute original ideas and questions to the conversation through the completion of Discussion Circles.

  • Use Zoom, Blogger and Twitter to communicate information about a text with peers and create/publish a final presentation of a theme using Buncee.

This unit will take approximately three weeks to complete. Students will be responsible for reading a portion of The Catcher in the Rye every day and preparing their discussion role and Tweet prior to the start of class. They also must have their Buncee presentation created and ready to present at the end of the third week. The weekly schedule can be found on the Schedule page.

Daily tasks and deadlines can be found on the Tasks page.

Since this unit depends largely on communication through technology, students' laptops will need to be charged and ready for use every day during class. They will need to ensure they have an account on Blogger, Twitter and Zoom to have these applications ready to use on the first day of the unit as well as Buncee by week three. Please read more about the technology they will need on the Technology page.

In exploring this site, pay close attention to the Assessment page to understand how students will be assessed for the blog posts, Tweets and discussion circles as well as for their final Buncee presentation.
